Excite Search Engine: The New Challenges
Excite has been around the web for many years now. It is much more of a portal than just simply a search engine. It used to be a fairly popular search engine, until companies such as Google seemed to have dominated the search engine market. As of recently, Excite no longer accepts submissions of URLs and appears to no longer spider. Excite does not use its own search engine but it is powered by Meta search. The Meta search monitors the search engine results of multiple major search engines and then compiles the results for users. It returns the best combination of results from all the engines and will become the ideal search engine of the future.
Excite is a collection of internet sites and services owned by IAC Search & Media, which is a subsidiary of InterActive Corporation (IAC). Excite was launched in 1994 as an online service offering a variety of content, including an Internet portal, a search engine, a web-based email, instant messaging, stock quotes and a customizable user homepage. The content was collated from over 100 different sources. In the 1990s, it became one of the most recognized brands on the internet.
History of Excite
Excite was originally formed in 1993 by five Stanford university graduates who called their search engine Architext. This was further developed by students attending Stanford and in 1994 Excite Inc. came about and was launched in 1995. When starting Excite had only acquired a web crawler in November 1996, then over the years they added features and software and the option of search on the World Wide Web.
IAC is a leading internet company with more than 50 fast-growing, highly-related brands serving loyal consumer audiences. Their mission is to harness the power of interactivity, to make daily life easier and be more productive for people all over the world. Ranked by Fortune magazine’s annual standing of the world’s most admired companies in the Internet Services & Retailing sector for many years, IAC’s network of sites has over 1.4 billion total monthly visits. With more than 275.5 million unique visitors across more than 30 countries, IAC’s network of sites would rank as the 5th largest in the world.
Searching Excite Website
Meta search engine performs searches on keywords inputted and is calculated by the combined ranking of all the search engines simultaneously used. The key to getting ranked high is to make sure you are listed in all the search engines used by the META search engines such as Excite. Meta search will become more important in the future because it will narrow down the results of the billions of pieces of information now available on the internet.
The problem that has become apparent with the larger search engines is their lack of precise capabilities in finding what the user wants. Websites like Excite offer information on their site directly, directs you to other sites with articles or information of importance, or gives you lists of sites that are related to the specific topic. Today, Excite has an index of 250,000,000 pages and multimedia items in 2000 and about 19,000,000 monthly users (40) which is bound to increase with utilizing keywords and Meta search technology.
